SAN JOSE -- A mysterious golf cart fire in the middle of Santa Teresa High School sent a black column of smoke into the sky and caused a brief panic before it was put out Friday evening.

The fire was reported at 8:44 p.m. at the campus at Snell Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard and initially attracted a two-alarm response because of the plume it produced and its location at the school.

But San Jose Fire Department officials quickly determined it involved an isolated golf cart and was not threatening any campus structures, and the second alarm call was rescinded, Fire Capt. Cleo Doss said.

What caused the golf cart to catch fire was not immediately clear and remains under investigation.
