NEWARK -- Car theft suspects holed up in a Newark motel surrendered to police Thursday morning after a brief standoff, authorities said.

Angela Jeter, 55, of Oakland, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property, while Ronald Jones, 44, of Hercules, was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine and a parole violation following the morning standoff at the Motel 6, 5601 Mowry Ave., Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa said.

No force was used and no one was injured. Neither suspect was armed when they came out, DeSerpa said.

The incident began about 7:30 a.m., when a city abatement officer ran the license place on a Nissan Altima parked at the motel and discovered it was stolen from Manteca.

A search of the Altima revealed a stolen handgun and officers used paperwork in the car to trace the driver to the motel room, DeSerpa said.

An armored vehicle and tactical equipment were brought in because officers didn't know if the suspects were armed. When officers knocked on the door and ordered the couple out, they initially refused.

About 20 minutes later, police say they convinced the pair to leave the room and they were taken into custody.
