According to the man who plays Ichabod Crane, there's one great advantage to all the wildly insane plot lines on "Sleepy Hollow": The show never has to worry about jumping the shark.
"There's not really a shark to jump, because in the pilot we kicked the shark in the teeth," Tom Mison told reporters at the TV critics press tour.
Despite some outrageous flights of fancy, the supernatural drama that would make Washington Irving's head spin became Fox's biggest hit when it debuted last fall and was the season's No. 2-ranked new show overall.
A big reason for that success was the remarkable chemistry that was instantly evident between Mison's Crane and detective Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie. That relationship, says executive producer Mark Goffman, "is at the core of everything we do."
Even so, fans shouldn't expect Ichabod and Abbie to get romantically involved very soon, if ever. Goffman was quick to remind everyone that Crane "is married and hopelessly in love" with Katrina.
Besides that, there will be "some real trust issues" between the Ichabod and Abbie during the 18-episode second season. Meanwhile, look for some intense drama between Ichabod and his wife.
"We're going to drop a few bombs with Crane and Katrina," Goffman teased. "We're going to find out a few things that neither of them could possibly be prepared for."
Getting back to Ichabod and Abbie, Beharie says she admires the fact that her character isn't defined by romantic desires.
"I love that they're so different. Crane has become a family member in a way," she said, adding that the on-screen relationship, in some ways, mirrors the relationship between the actors, "in that we spend a lot of time together and there's a shorthand, and a level of intimacy and vulnerability and transparency ..."
As for the on-screen interactions between the two, Mison admits that it's sometimes difficult for the characters to tamp down the sexual tension.
"Running around the woods in the middle of the night chasing monsters is profoundly erotic, so sometimes I have to throw a saucy look," he joked. "Hashtag Ichabbie"
