ATHERTON -- A 32-year-old Atherton man suffered major injuries after he was hit by a car while crossing the street Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The collision, which was reported around 3:34 p.m. at El Camino Real and Almendral Avenue, closed the busy road for roughly two hours while officers investigated.

According to police, witnesses told officers that the Atherton man was not using the crosswalk as he attempted to cross El Camino Real. He was hit by a 17-year-old San Carlos girl driving a red Volvo S40 sedan, police added, and the teen remained on scene and has been cooperative with investigators. She was not cited.

The 32-year-old man was transported to Stanford Hospital with major injuries, and an update on his condition was not immediately available Wednesday night.
