OAKLAND -- A 17-year-old boy playing basketball was wounded during a shootout in East Oakland's Brookdale Park on Thursday evening, police said.

The gunplay erupted at about 7:15 p.m. near the park's basketball courts on Brookdale Avenue near High Street, police said. The teenager was playing ball when he was struck in the leg, and nearby cars and houses were also hit by gunfire. The teen was hospitalized and is expected to recover.

A group of suspects sped away from the park but crashed nearby on Brookdale Avenue, police said. No arrests were made and no motive for the shooting was released.

The park shooting was the city's second such incident involving a child victim over the past week. On July 19, a 10-year-old girl attending a birthday party was shot in the arm in West Oakland's Lowell Park.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money in each shooting for information leading to the arrest of the gunmen. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
