ALAMEDA -- The Frank Bette Center for the Arts will showcase artistic talent from around the Island and the United States on Saturday at South Shore Center.
During the day, 40 artists will exhibit paintings they made "en plein air" -- or outdoors -- in Alameda over the past few days as part of the ninth Annual Plein Air Paintout. In addition, several artists will do portraits and other paintings live at the event.
"The Plein Air Paintout is a very diverse event," said Margaret Fago, vice president of the Frank Bette Center. "It's become a very popular event for artists nationwide, so we have applicants and participants from many different areas."
Each year, up to 75 artists apply to join the program, which takes place each summer. This year, it includes painters from as far away as Fort Collins, Colorado, and Maurertown, Virginia. About half of this year's participants are Bay Area artists, while many others come from the Sacramento and Southern California areas.
"People enjoy seeing what our community looks like through the eyes of artists, particularly those who are not from the immediate area," Fago explained. "There will be paintings of gardens, beaches, parks, houses, boats and other scenes that artists have seen while working outdoors in Alameda."
On Wednesday, during a quick-draw event, for instance, artists had up to three hours to complete a painting in and around Encinal Avenue, between Webster and Chestnut streets, as well as in Crab Cove and Franklin Park. These paintings will be featured at Saturday's event, and many will be in a show at the Frank Bette Center, 1601 Paru St., from Aug. 8 to Sept. 28.
"It's great to have the Plein Air Paintout event at South Shore," Fago said, "because it's a great facility. The South Shore staff and retailers are so happy to have us. It's terrific."
The Plein Air show and sale at South Shore will feature paintings that can be bought for about $200 to $1,200. The works also will be on sale at the Frank Bette Center, which will host a reception for the Plein Air Paintout artists from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 8.
