August is popularly referred to as the "Dog Days of Summer," and there are now two special days in the month devoted to our beloved canine pals. Aug. 5 is "Work Like A Dog Day," and Aug. 26 is "National Dog Day." We all know that cats rule the world (!) but apparently not in August!
Cats are still plentiful here at Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter, especially kittens. To help them find new homes we are offering our Free Friday Adoption Specials for August. Pets adopted from FAAS have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, medically and behavior-screened and have been loved by all the staff and volunteers at the shelter. In addition, dogs adopted from FAAS receive free training classes. Celebrate the "Dog Days of Summer" by adopting a new best friend from FAAS!
Another great way to celebrate this month is to take your dog to work with you. More companies are allowing highly sociable dogs into the workplace because they find that dogs improve morale, create a more positive work environment and decrease absenteeism.
If you are able to take your dog to work, make sure that he/she is well behaved, knows basic commands and that his or her vaccines are up to date. It's best to only take spayed/neutered dogs to work with you. Your co-workers will appreciate you and your dog if he or she has recently had a flea treatment and perhaps a bath and nail trim, too.
Please make sure you have your work space set up for your dog and none of your co-workers have allergies or fears that could make them uncomfortable around your pet. We hope you enjoy this great month of August and the "Dog Days of Summer."

Pet Of The Week: ERICA is a very sweet 10-month-old female orange tabby. There are very few orange female cats, so Erica is uniquely exquisite.
Dog Alley: There are 16 available dogs and puppies at the shelter. MOOSE is a very handsome, large purebred tan/brown German shepherd that needs a home with someone who likes exercise and having a great pal to hang with. WILSON is a black-tan miniature pinscher that is about 8 years old.
Cat Lair: There are 34 available cats and kittens at the shelter. ORPHUS and OPHELIA are darling 2-month-old kittens waiting for their new playmate. SNICKERS is a 6-month-old tortie cutie.
RABBIT ROW: Martin, Dulce, Cubby, Squash and Fritz are all male neutered handsome rabbits available for adoption.
