OAKLAND -- A tractor-trailer carrying 10 tons of parts from the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge tipped over Tuesday morning in West Oakland, authorities said.
The truck tipped on its side at 8:19 a.m. as the driver turned onto southbound Market Street from eastbound Third Street, spilling one piece of the old bridge onto the sidewalk, authorities said. The independent trucker from Daly City was not injured.
The driver was on his way to Schnitzer Steel, a metals recycling yard at 1101 Embarcadero West near the Port of Oakland. It took two tow trucks to lift the tractor-trailer upright, authorities said.
Market Street between Third Street and Embarcadero West initially remained open, but was closed from about 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. while crews righted the tipped truck, transferred the steel to another truck for the trip to Schnitzer, and cleaned up small fuel and other fluid spills.
Police are investigating the wreck.
