UNION CITY -- A 40-year-old Union City man suspected of shooting at feral cats with a BB gun was cited this week in connection to the incident.

Officers responded at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday to the 31000 block of Santa Cruz Way for a report of a man with a gun who may have fired at homes in the neighborhood, Cmdr. Ben Horner said.

Callers told police that the man was sitting in a van parked in a driveway.

Arriving officers saw the man get out of the van and he was detained and handcuffed at gunpoint based on the nature of the call, Horner said.

Officers searched the man's van and found a BB gun in the front passenger seat.

"He told us he was trying to rid the neighborhood of feral cats," Horner said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was then cited for being in possession of a dangerous weapon and discharging it within 500 yards of any structure or development and/or within city limits.

No cats were hit by the pellets, Horner said.

"We believe he may have fired it towards the homes but no one was injured, no animals were injured and we could locate no property damage," Horner said. "So, in reality, he probably was firing it off for a bit until the cavalry showed up to detain him."
