SANTA CLARA -- In what's being called a "tragic accident," police are continuing to investigate the death of an 89-year-old Santa Clara woman who was hit by a car backing out of a driveway Saturday morning.
The victim was walking on the east side of Monroe Street between Harrison and Fremont streets around 9:30 a.m. when she was hit by the vehicle that was in reverse, according to Santa Clara police.
Witness accounts say the driver actually continued north on Monroe for about a half-block before realizing what happened. Neighbors recalled being woken up by a woman screaming for someone to call 911.
"At this point it looks like a tragic accident," Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke said.
The victim's name has not been formally released by authorities, but her niece contacted this newspaper and identified her as Eloise Lucaroni, 89, of Santa Clara.
The driver remained on the scene and was cooperative with police, Clarke said. The deadly collision occurred across the street from the Santa Clara Senior Center. It was not immediately clear if Lucaroni was a patron; the center is closed Sundays.
