DALY CITY -- The body of a man found washed ashore on Mussel Rock Beach was identified as missing Daly City man Terry John Mullen, the San Mateo County coroner said Tuesday.
Mullen's body was spotted by a fisherman about 12:15 p.m. Friday at the base of a cliff off Skyline Boulevard, officials said. The 45-year-old stagehand and father of two was reported missing by his wife the prior evening, the night before the couple's 16th wedding anniversary.
Terry Mullen's wife, Angelique Mullen, said she last saw her husband playing on his tablet before she went to bed about 11:15 p.m. Thursday. She awoke to find his cellphone and red Ford Taurus missing from the house. She reported his uncharacteristic departure to police about 4 a.m., citing worry that he had been depressed and "not himself" in the months leading up to his disappearance.
While details surrounding Mullen's actions in those early morning hours remain unclear, San Mateo County Robert Foucrault said his body was found just after noon that same day. His clothes were dry upon discovery, he said, but he appeared to have been in the water at some point.
Daly City police Sgt. Harold Rolfes said foul play is not thought to be a factor, and Foucrault said his office is still working to conclusively rule that out. Detectives conducted interviews with family and friends Tuesday as autopsy proceedings continued at the coroner's office.
"My husband was a kind, gentle soul," Angelique Mullen said in an interview Tuesday. "He was the kind of guy who would always put others first and himself last. Every time ... I am indeed heartbroken that he is gone."
