SAN JOSE -- Officials have publicly identified the man suspected of stabbing his stepfather to death at their Almaden Valley home over the weekend.
Daniel Hsiao, 22, is being held without bail at Santa Clara County jail in the death of 55-year-old Ian Leighton, after an altercation Saturday evening in their home on Charter Oak Place, right next to Leland High School, the San Jose Police Department said.
Police were called just after 6 p.m. for reports of a stabbing, and found Leighton suffering from multiple stab wounds. His wife, 50, was also wounded, but is expected to survive.
Officers found Hsiao a few blocks away, and he surrendered quietly and was taken into police custody.
In the immediate aftermath, residents in both the cul-de-sac and their previous neighborhood in the Santa Teresa area remembered discord at the home involving Hsiao, who is believed to be the son of Leighton's wife from a previous relationship and lived with them intermittently. On multiple occasions, they recalled police responding to the Leighton home for family disturbances.
The stabbing marked the city's 24th homicide of the year.
