HAYWARD -- City and campus police are preparing this week for a crime they hope will never unfold -- a gunman on campus.

Officers from CSU East Bay, Chabot College and the Hayward police are taking part in active-shooter drills from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

The exercise will take place at the Pioneer Heights residence halls at CSU East Bay's Hayward campus.

The drill will give the three agencies "opportunities to enhance coordination, communications, tactics, and negotiating skills," according to a news release from CSU East Bay.

It is closed to the public.
