Former Stanford safety Delano Howell is seeking more medical opinions about a neck injury that has kept him out of Indianapolis Colts practice for almost two weeks and could threaten his season or even his career, general manager Ryan Grigson said Tuesday.

Howell, 24, also missed the final 10 games last season with a neck injury.

Howell entered training camp as the front-runner to win the starting job opposite LaRon Landry in the Colts secondary.

Coach Chuck Pagano and Grigson were so confident Howell could plug the void left by longtime starter Antoine Bethea that they didn't draft a safety in May. Bethea signed with the 49ers as a free agent.

Howell was an All-Pac-12 first-team selection as a senior in 2011. Indianapolis signed Howell off the Buffalo Bills practice squad in 2012, and he played in five games for the Colts that season.
