SANTA CLARA -- A man who stranded himself in a tree and a woman who ran naked during a failed escape from a hotel rooftop last week have extensive burglary records, adding a dash of context to the hoard of stolen items found afterward in their room and car, authorities said.
The bizarre encounter ended with the arrests of Fabian Hagnere, 29, and San Jose resident Jessica Lawler, 22, at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara on Great America Parkway, across from Levi's Stadium.
They were arraigned Tuesday on charges of possessing stolen property, possessing others' identifying information with the intent to defraud, possessing illegal drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
Santa Clara police say officers went to a room at the hotel about 8:40 a.m. Aug. 14 to serve an arrest warrant for Lawler. When they announced their presence, police say Lawler and Hagnere, who was also in the room, climbed out a back window and ran across a third-story roof.
Hagnere leapt off the roof's edge and onto a tree, but couldn't get down. Police summoned firefighters, who brought a ladder, and he climbed down and was arrested.
Lawler, who police said was naked when she fled, chose not to follow her companion off the roof and surrendered.
Police say officers searched their room and vehicle and discovered stolen property including mail, financial documents, credit cards, jewelry, cellphones and other electronics, a meth pipe and burglary tools.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office said Lawler has two prior burglary convictions and could be eligible for life in prison under the state's three-strikes law. Hagnere was wanted on a $50,000 arrest warrant for allegations related to identity theft, second-degree burglary and meth possession. He has also served five stints in state prison.
