MARIN -- The identity of the pilot killed in a single-engine plane crash in West Marin last week was confirmed as Robert Madge, the Redwood City man to whom the plan was registered, the coroner's office said Tuesday.

Madge, 51, was identified through dental records, said sheriff's Lt. Keith Boyd, head of the county coroner's division.

The crash occurred Aug. 18 after Madge reported engine problems over Marin. He was flying from Brookings, Oregon, to San Carlos.

Madge told aviation officials he was going to attempt an emergency landing at the Marin County Airport in Novato, but he crashed on a ranch just north of Hicks Valley. The crash sparked a 32-acre grass fire.

Madge was the only person in the plane, a Beechcraft Bonanza.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
