BERKELEY -- One person was clinging to life and another person was behind bars Friday after a brutal early morning attack inside a Berkeley home.

Just after 12:49 a.m., police responded to 911 call reporting a male yelling and making threats inside an apartment in the 2000 block of Durant Avenue, Officer Jennifer Coats said.

Officers heard the shouting when they arrived and discovered two males inside, one severely-injured, Coats said.

Berkeley fire crews arrived and the victim was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, Lawrence Landis, 69, of Berkeley was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and booked into Berkeley City Jail.

Police would not elaborate on the victim's injuries.

A motive was not immediately known for the attack, but investigators do not believe it was a random.
