CAMPBELL -- An elderly man who apparently fell backward into oncoming traffic was struck and killed Friday afternoon near one of the city's busiest intersections.
The accident in the westbound lane of Hamilton Avenue, west of Winchester Boulevard, was first reported at 1:40 p.m., with numerous onlookers witnessing the pedestrian's death, Campbell police Capt. Gary Berg said.
The accident caused a shutdown of westbound Hamilton as police investigated the fatality.
Berg said a man in his 80s, who authorities have yet to identify, was given first aid but died at the scene. According to preliminary reports from witnesses, the man was crossing the street outside of the sidewalk. When he reached the center median, Berg said, he fell back into the westbound lane of Hamilton Avenue and was struck by a small sedan.
The vehicle's driver has been cooperative with police and is not suspected of alcohol or drug use while driving, police said.
"It's unfortunately a tragic accident," Berg said.
