MARTINEZ — Public health officials suspect that a Contra Costa County resident might have contracted Salmonella during a recent visit to Chicago, Ill., where other cases of the illness have been reported.
The California Department of Public Health has found that the woman who came down with Salmonella Saintpaul probably got it by eating raw tomatoes, which are thought to be responsible for a current outbreak in several states.
Officials don't yet know which variety of the fruit is suspect or where it originated, so the investigation is continuing.
The woman was not hospitalized and has recovered.
The federal government is recommending consumers eat only cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, those sold with the vine attached and homegrown produce.
