BRENTWOOD -- In a game marred by multiple penalties and turnovers, the host Liberty High football team pulled away from Hayward in the second half for an 18-6 nonleague victory.
Ivan Oseguera led all rushers with 86 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter on a 10-yard run. Cody Maghuyop added a three-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.
Oseguera took over as quarterback for the Lions (1-2) in the second quarter, after a fumble recovery in the end zone had given Hayward (0-3) a 6-0 lead. Oseguera accounted for all 55 yards on the ensuing drive, tying the game with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Conor Green, a mere 40 seconds after the Farmers had gone ahead.
Liberty had multiple opportunities to extend their lead in the second half, but consecutive possessions inside the Hayward 10-yard line came up empty, as penalties pushed the Lions out of scoring range on each drive. The Lions also committed four turnovers, enabling Hayward to stay close throughout the game.
The Liberty defense, however, ensured that Hayward would not be able to mount a challenge in the second half, holding the Farmers to 64 yards rushing, and intercepting both pass attempts by the Hayward offense.
Kyle Trego had both interceptions for the Lions' defense.
