SANTA ROSA -- Elijah Lucy won the boys 100 meters and the long jump and took second in the 200 to help the Emery High boys track and field team tie for fifth place at the Class A Championships at Montgomery High on Saturday.

Lucy's marks in the 100 and long jump would have been meet records, had they been wind-legal.

Lucy won the 100 with a late burst, edging out Stuart Hall's Bosco Bapuopeleh by .01 seconds (10.81-10.82). The wind was 3.3 meters-per-second, well over the allowable of 2.0. The meet record in the event is 10.87.

In the long jump, Lucy won with a jump of 22 feet, 7 ½ inches. No wind readings were taken on the event. Emery coach Todd Ross said the winning jump came off of Lucy's left foot. Lucy is a junior and Ross said he has progressed mightily since taking up the sport his freshman year.

"He went from 27.3 to 22.6 in the 200 in one year," Ross said.

Bapuopeleh came back to dominate the 200 on Saturday, winning in 21.72 to Lucy's 22.38. The wind was just 0.9 mps on that race, so Bapuopeleh got a meet record. Both advanced to next weekend's NCS Meet of Champions in both sprints.

"Next Friday, Meet of Champions, I'm gonna get him," Lucy said.

Lucy scored 28 of Emery's 32 points on the afternoon. This is Lucy's first year running the 100. He started out as a 400 runner and has worked his way down to the shorter sprints. He's also a football player at Emery and is hoping to earn a college scholarship in either sport.
