HAYWARD -- The Redwood Christian High softball team scored five times in the fifth inning, propelling the Eagles to a 7-6 win over Ferndale on Friday in the North Coast Section Division V championship game at Larry Standley Field in Hayward.
It is Redwood Christian's first-ever section championship in softball.
The Eagles (20-2) trailed 6-2 after Ferndale scored six runs in the top of the fifth. Kylee Branstetter hit a liner that scored two runs. Maci Branstetter followed with a two-run double before Taryn DeMille and Ashli Sines followed with back-to-back RBI singles for the Wildcats (20-5).
With two outs in the Redwood Christian's half of the fifth, Marissa Costa doubled to right and Clare Dunnegan reached on an error. Costa scored on an infield error before Jamie McPherson doubled home a run, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 6-4.
Sophomore Miara Cahee laced a triple to right to score two runs, and Jena Forsberg brought home Cahee with a single to center to give the Eagles the lead right back.
Dunnegan, Redwood Christian's senior pitcher, gave up a leadoff infield single in the seventh but got a pop out and two ground balls to end the game. She finished with four strikeouts.
"This feeling of winning the first softball title for our school is incredible," Dunnegan said. "Our team didn't panic, and we knew we could come back in the game when we fell behind."
