East County: Former wrestler still helping teens grapple with life

Shannon Yancey, a Brentwood resident and physical education teacher at Oakley's Freedom High, had a successful 10-year wrestling career. Her skills on the mat took her all the way to "American Gladiators," where she competed for a season on the popular TV show. 
Johnny Rodriguez is named Citizen of the Year; Delta Pure Water is Business of the Year.  
Antioch father-and-son team Fred and Mike Belus train homing pigeons for long-distance races.  
Master teacher Nancy Fierro will instruct selected local students who will perform at the Pittsburg event.  
The 13th annual Brentwood Liberty Idol competition opens at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Liberty High School's Performing Art Center. Tickets at the door will be $8 for students and $10 for general public. Proceeds will go to ALS Association.
