Pittsburg Community Theatre holds auditions
PITTSBURG -- Pittsburg Community Theatre will hold auditions for Disney's "The Little Mermaid Jr." 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Hillview Junior High School, 333 Yosemite Road. Pittsburg.
Auditions are open to anyone 18 years of age or younger. Come with a prepared song to sing and to do cold readings from the script.
Auditions will be held simultaneously for the original one-act "Tale of the Blue Moon," written by three local students. "Tale of the Blue Moon" is story about two siblings who go fishing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida and their unexpected adventure.

Gallery shows mixed media and bonsai art

'The Hobbit' comes to the Liberty stage
BRENTWOOD -- The Liberty High School Playmakers will present a theatrical version of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic story "The Hobbit" at the Liberty High School Allan E. Jones Performing Arts Center, 850 Second St., Brentwood.
The story follows the quest of Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit who goes on a journey with 13 dwarves and the wizard Gandalf. Together they set off to defeat the evil dragon Smaug in the prequel to the Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy.
An interesting twist in the production will include the use of masks and large puppets to bring a new type of theater experience to the community.
Performances are 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. Additional performances are 7 p.m. Sept. 6 and 7 and 2 p.m. Sept. 8. Calendar, art exhibit submissions are sought
ANTIOCH -- The Delta Science Center is looking for art submissions for a 2013 calendar.
The nonprofit is looking for photos for the annual Sacramento-San Joaquin Educational Resource calendar and to submit to the upcoming Delta Art Show at Lynn House Gallery. Each year the Delta Science Center creates a calendar that is donated to local schools with information that will help students understand the importance of the Delta's ecology to the state of California. This year the nonprofit is also co-hosting an art exhibit in conjunction with the Mt. Diablo Audubon Society at the downtown Antioch gallery Sept. 8-29. Artwork must be submitted by Sept. 4.
The theme of the art exhibit is nature.
An artists' reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 8. The reception and exhibit are free to the public.

Local writers invited to take part in anthology
BRENTWOOD -- The city of Brentwood, Brentwood Writes and Brentwood Poet Laureate Kati Short invite all local writers to submit poetry, short story or nonfiction for an anthology to be published by the city of Brentwood.
Any subject is welcome as long as it is not insulting or abusive. All writers in Pittsburg, Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen and Bethel Island, or writers who are regular participants at Brentwood Writes Open Mic, are welcome. High school students are encouraged to contribute. Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 28.

Delta Blues Festival offers music, art, food
ANTIOCH -- The 14th annual Delta Blues Festival is set for noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in downtown Antioch between Second and I streets.
The alcohol-free event will feature music, art, crafts and food vendors. The musical lineup includes the Kenny Neal Band, Gino Matteo, Mo Fo Party Band, BigCat Tolfree, Marshall Law Band and Sam-ONE.

Ballerina Dance Academy opens
BRENTWOOD -- Angelina Ballerina, the "little star with big dreams," will soon be sharing her love of dance with children in East County. East County Performing Arts Center is now an official Angelina Ballerina Dance Academy, and joins a growing network of more than 110 studios across North America that offer weekly classes based on the beloved dancing mouseling, star of the Angelina Ballerina book series and animated television program.
The 34-week program is inspired by the CG-animated series airing on PBS KIDS and "Sprout, Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps," and it will focus on one storybook per month.
Targeted at children ages 3 to 6 years old, the program teaches beginner ballet at two levels.
