Liberty Adult Education celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy from Sept. 10-16.
The group will host Civics Day at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at 925 Second St. in Brentwood. The student-centered assembly will include promoting the need and "the power of literacy" in the community and a giveaway of books, pencils and calendars.
According to its news release, adult education and family literacy programs serve adult students who need to improve their oral and written English, practice for the GED test to attain a high school equivalency degree, prepare for community college or vocational training.
A national survey showed more than 93 million American adults have basic or below-basic literacy skills "that limit their ability to advance at work and in education, help their children with school work, interact with their health care professionals, and participate in their communities."

SELL-A-THON: Does your storage area runneth over?
Well, Bristow Middle is ready to help.
Slated from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 15, the Brentwood school hosts a rummage sale. Those interested in selling their wares -- be it from home or a vendor selling new merchandise -- are invited to be part of this fundraiser.
The event, held at 855 Minnesota Ave., will be run by school groups F.O.R. (Friends of Rachel) Club, the journalism class
Stalls -- the size of two parking stalls -- cost $25. And, if you're not interested in selling, of course, buyers are needed. For more info, email email@example.com or pop into the school office.
DINNER TIME!: In addition to offering breakfast and lunch to students in need, now the Antioch Unified School District will add dinner to its offerings.
Starting Sept. 17, the district will be able to serve dinner to those enrolled in the after-school programs at Belshaw, Fremont, Kimball, Marsh and Mission elementaries, along with Antioch and Park middle campuses.
In conjunction with the Department of Agriculture's Child and Adult Care Food Program, the district is able to offer this during school days.
