Just a month into school, and Liberty Union teachers were going the extra distance to hit the books.

About 25 instructors from Freedom, Heritage, Independent, La Paloma and Liberty high schools recently attended a workshop hosted by California Department of Education, State Board of Education and the California State University.

The Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), which aligns with the California English-language Arts Content Standards, tackles vital reading and writing problems identified by the state's placement test committee, and readies students to meet the expectations of college and university faculty, according to Todd Airola, BTSA coordinator.

Airola said English teachers within the district received training and materials to "help better prepare students to become college- and career-ready while enrolled in our schools."

The program, run over four days, is fairly new, and the first year Liberty Union has participated.

"Feedback was positive," Airola said. "(Overall), teachers stated they believe it will be a high yield tool to implement in the classroom for student learning."

He added that the Expository Reading and Writing Course is a valuable resource in preparing students for college, career readiness and "transition toward recently adopted Common Core Standards."
