Bobcats battle frosh in two close ones: Civil war, in a gridiron manner of speaking, broke out in Brentwood when the Bobcats of the Brentwood Elementary School trekked across the highway and tangled with the Liberty frosh squad in a pair of games. The frosh won both games, but only after their younger opponents gave them a battle. In a game played Oct. 13, the Bobcats scored a safety in the first half and let at halftimes, 2-0. The frosh came back to score twice in the second half and make the final score 13-2. Last week Thursday the Bobcats tried it again and held the frosh even until the fourth quarter. A blocked punt gave the frosh the ball on the Bobcats' 20-yard line and they scored three plays later with a pass, en route to a final score of 7-0. Among the Bobcat players who may reinforce future Liberty teams were Ray Spanger, Charles Ochoa, J.C. Wolfenbarger, Herman Urenda and Jackie England.

Firefighters get promotions: Veteran Knightsen fireman Ray Gilmore and relative newcomer John Dailey were promoted recently, according to a spokesman for the Knightsen Fire Department, a branch of the Oakley Fire Protection District.
Gilmore, a 10-year veteran, was promoted to lieutenant, to fill up a post left by fireman Tony Berumen who resigned as captain. Dailey, who has been with Knightsen about 11/2 years, was named department training officer, replacing Alan Roberts, who retired.
Both men are professional firefighters in other areas. Gilmore is assistant captain at the fire department at the Concord Naval Weapons Station, and Dailey is with a fire department on the peninsula.
Dailey's responsibilities will include public contact as well as the training of firefighters. He was one of the firefighters in charge of the recent Knightsen School disaster drill.
Gilmore will be second in command to the captain, and fill in for him or other officers when needed. He will also fulfill any other responsibilities as needed said Manuel Tovar, Oakley Fire Protection District chief.
