Pittsburg poised for playoff run

  • The Pittsburg High football team handed Antioch a 42-14 loss in the Big Little Game on Nov. 2. It was the third straight victory of the season for the Pirates, who earned the No. 9 seed for the North Coast Section Division I playoffs and will play at Monte Vista. Jamal Lockett had 14 carries for 284 yards for Pittsburg. For Antioch, Alex Obias completed 16 of 31 passes for 132 yards.

    Heritage upsets Deer Valley

  • The Heritage High football team finished the season in style with a 24-21 upset victory over Deer Valley on Nov. 2. Heritage quarterback Anthony Carter completed 8 of 12 passes for 107 yards and running backs Julian Johnson and Mason Sargent ran for 53 and 43 yards, respectively.

    Liberty shares BVAL title

  • The Liberty High girls volleyball team defeated Deer Valley 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21 on Nov. 1 to earn a share of the Bay Valley Athletic League championship for the first time since 2005. Katie Dillon had 19 service points, 12 blocks, 7 kills, 10 digs and 4 aces to lead Liberty, which finished with a 9-1 record in league play, the same as Heritage.

  • Pittsburg at Monte Vista, football, Nov. 9, 7 p.m. -- Pittsburg will try to upset a powerful East Bay Athletic League opponent in Monte Vista in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs.

  • Berkeley at Freedom, football, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. -- The BVAL-champion Falcons host Berkeley (5-4) in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs.

  • Contra Costa at Los Medanos, football, Nov. 10, 1 p.m. -- The Mustangs host the Comets in the Bay Valley Conference finale for both teams. Los Medanos needs a win over first place Contra Costa to earn a share of the conference title.

  • Julian Johnson, Heritage football -- Johnson ran for 53 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for the Patriots in their 24-21 win over Deer Valley.

  • Dante Mayes, Freedom football -- Mayes completed 11 of 14 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-0 win over Liberty in the Bell Game.
