LONDON -- Chen Ruolin of China led the women's 10-meter platform preliminaries at the London Olympics as the teenager tries to add a gold medal in the individual event to the one she won in platform synchro.
Chen totaled 392.35 points during five rounds on Wednesday. She is the defending champion in the individual event, and won both 10-meter titles four years ago in Beijing when she was 15.
The top 18 advanced to the morning semifinal on Thursday.
That group included American Brittany Viola, the 25-year-old daughter of 1988 Cy Young winning pitcher Frank Viola. Brittany Viola finished 14th in the prelmswith 322.55 points. American Katie Bell qualified ninth at 326.95.
"I'm a nervous wreck," Viola told The Associated Press a few hours before walking into the pool along with nearly 20 family and friends to cheer on his oldest daughter. "It's a lot easier going out for Game 7 knowing you have the ball in your hand and you're in control. In the stands, you're a parent and have no control."
