Stanford freshman fencer Alexander Massialas edged fellow 2012 Olympian Gerek Meinhardt of San Francisco 15-14 to win the foil title this weekend at the North American Cup in Saint Louis.
Massialas and Meinhardt both train at the Massialas Foundation at Halberstadt club under Alexander's father Greg, a two-time Olympian. The fencers were members of the U.S. team that finished fourth in the foil competition in London.
"Gerek's a great fencer," Alexander Massialas told USA Fencing. "I've looked up to him since I was a kid since. I was expecting a hard bout and we've battled it out in the past, but looks like I had the day."
San Francisco's Nobuo Bravo, a Penn State freshman, was fifth in Saint Louis while Mountain View's Jerry Chang, a Harvard freshman, was sixth.
