Burlingame High junior Ilan Lesov figured he was in store for some ribbing after rushing for five touchdowns against visiting Capuchino on Friday night. Sure enough, his teammates gave Lesov a moniker well before the end of the Panthers' 35-13 romp.
"They called me Ilan Cinco," said a smiling Lesov, who totaled 157 yards on 19 carries.
Riding its slight yet powerful running back, Burlingame (2-1) overwhelmed the Mustangs (0-2) in the first half and never looked back. The 5-foot-7 Lesov scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and added another before the intermission, gaining 137 yards as the Panthers went ahead 28-0.
"He's 155 pounds of muscle," said Burlingame coach John Philipopoulos, whose team rebounded from a 48-21 drubbing at mighty Palo Alto last week. "He's one of the strongest kids on the team."
Burlingame's Max Elia returned the opening kickoff 69 yards, and Lesov ran inside for a 5-yard touchdown four plays later. Elia, 5-8 and 150 pounds, also had two interceptions, both leading to Lesov scores.
Lesov, who had four touchdowns in the Little Big Game as a sophomore, also ran for touchdowns of 12, 5, 5 and 8 yards.
Capuchino, which didn't find its rhythm until it trailed 35-0 early in the second half, turned some heads by beginning the game with a pass-happy offense. The normally run-centric Mustangs didn't attempt their first carry until their fourth possession.
John Bacchi, a 6-2, 180-pound junior,
"It's a learning thing," Mustangs coach Chris Chaika said. "We've got some new toys, but it all comes down to the front five blocking."
Capuchino's Anthony Amato gained 98 yards on 15 carries, Will Scott ran for a 6-yard touchdown and C.J. Caliz added a 32-yard touchdown run down the stretch.
Burlingame's Jordan Pessah (71 yards on eight carries) and Dan Cuddy (11 rushes for 61 yards) helped the hosts amass 319 yards on the ground.
