  • Class, 'Acting from the Ground Up' -- 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays Jan. 29-March 25. Veteran actor Richard Farrell (currently appearing as Scrooge in San Jose Repertory Theatre's production of "A Christmas Carol") will be conducting an acting class geared toward beginners as well as more experienced performers wishing to work on their acting skills. The class will focus on the beginnings of creating a role through talking and listening, personalization and image work. Mr. Farrell has performed and taught classes at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Alabama Shakespeare Festival's Professional Actor Training Program, Center Rep's Young Rep summer program and holds a master's degree from The University of Washington Professional Actor Training Program.   • Embrace Your Dark Side:

    Film Noir at Moraga Library -- 2 p.m. Jan. 23. Join County Librarian and film noir buff Barbara Flynn at the first of three free film noir screenings. "Force of Evil," the first of the series, was directed by Abraham Polonsky, later blacklisted and prevented from directing for several decades. The gritty, dark film has attained cult status and stars John Garfield in one of the most memorable roles of his career. This quintessential noir film is both tough and intelligent. The screening, free and open to the public, starts at 2 p.m. There will be time for discussion following the screening. Preregistration is not required for Embrace Your Dark Side film series.   • Lafayette United Methodist Church Community Service Day -- Jan. 26. A few hours of service can make a positive change in the community.
