Dons baseball flying high

  • Defense and pitching has shined for the Acalanes High baseball team recently. The Dons held on to the top spot in the DFAL standings with shutout wins over Miramonte and Dougherty Valley last week. John York struck out seven in the 4-0 win over the Matadors while Andrew Merken was solid in a 5-0 victory against the Wildcats.

    Broncos, Eagles split series

  • The Northgate and Berean Christian softball teams split a pair of DVAL games during the week of April 8. A big game from Tia Uyehara lifted Berean Christian to a 7-5 win in the first contest. But the Broncos got even two days later with Julia Pelletier and Adrianna Chan leading an offensive onslaught. The Broncos won 14-3 as Chan and Pelletier each went 4 for 5 and drove in four runs apiece.

    Strong showing for Bulldogs

  • The Alhambra High softball team enjoyed an undefeated weekend at the Reed Invitational in Sparks, Nevada to improve to 11-1 overall. Led by Kylee Perez at the plate and Erin Enke in the circle, the Bulldogs went 4-0-1 with victories over Freedom, Newark Memorial, Wooster-Reno and North Valleys-Reno. Perez and Bella Gonsalves each hit homers in Alhambra's closest win of the weekend, a 3-2 win over Freedom.

    Minutemen win twice

  • Concord High's baseball team evened its DVAL record at 2-2 with a pair of victories over Ygnacio Valley last week. The Minutemen won 11-0 and 5-0 as Ryan Chew, Cody Crocker and Daniel Golden combined on the pitching duties. Sophomore Jonathan Pluth had three hits and two RBIs in the second victory.

  • Campolindo at Dougherty Valley, boys volleyball, April 19, 6 p.m. -- The Cougars have emerged as one of the East Bay's top teams, and they'll put their impressive league record on the line against the upstart Wildcats.

  • Alhambra at Acalanes, softball, April 23, 4 p.m. -- The Dons have piled up wins this season, but the defending league champions from Alhambra might be the toughest team they've seen yet.

    Stars of the week

  • Natalie Goepel, Acalanes softball -- The senior pitched a complete game shutout in the Dons' 1-0 win over Dougherty Valley on April 11. She struck out five.

  • Manny Manzone, Campolindo boys golf -- Manzone's round of 2-under par 34 at the Orinda Country Club on April 11 lifted the Cougars to a 191-196 team win over Miramonte.

  • Leo Costa, Alhambra baseball -- The junior was 2 for 5 and drove in the game-winning run in the 11th inning as the Bulldogs earned a 3-2 walk-off win over Dublin on April 12.

  • Ben Krauth, Diablo Valley baseball -- The Northgate High graduate tossed nine strong innings to lead the Vikings over American River 5-2 on April 12. Krauth scattered five hits and struck out eight.

  • Kylee Perez, Alhambra softball -- The junior shortstop was 9 for 13 in fives games at the Reed Invitational in Nevada from April 12-13. She had 10 RBI, seven runs and two homers.

  • Cali Castagnola, Carondelet girls lacrosse -- The senior's six goals and two assists lead the Cougars over Monte Vista 22-7 on April 12.

  • Julia Pelletier, Northgate softball -- The sophomore went 6 for 9 in two games against Berean Christian. She had four hits, including two triples and a home run, in a 14-3 win over the Eagles on April 11.
