I am happy to report that the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority is now a part of the "social media age." The agency has revamped its Facebook page to better connect with a wider audience interested in waste reduction and recycling topics.

Social media is a great no-cost/low-cost way of interacting with community members; and that's a plus in these tight economic times. One of the most important features of social media, though, is that it's a way to connect in "real time." That's especially important when, like the solid waste agency, you're dealing with services and programs that can be rather dynamic.

But our Facebook page isn't just about informing the community about programs and services. We hope it will be a fun and motivating way of interacting with the agency and others with like interests. We want you and your friends and neighbors to use it as a jumping off point for thinking about waste in a whole new way, as a resource. To step it up a notch, the agency will also have the occasional contest, quiz or game sprinkled in.

If you're a Facebook user, the solid waste agency would like to encourage you to share your waste reduction and recycling ideas, experiences, and events with us at www.facebook.com/CCCSWA. And, including a photo is always a fun way to help make sure your post gets noticed. While you're on our page, please make sure to "like" us!

We also understand that many of you are not comfortable with new electronic media. If you're not on Facebook, don't worry. The CCCSWA will still be doing our more traditional outreach efforts, too. Our ever-popular residential newsletter, Diversions, will still be published, along with newspaper and magazine ads, brochures, presentations, and the like.

I hope that all you Facebook users will visit our page and let us know what you think.

If you have a question, comment or idea about current or future solid waste programs, please email them to lois@wastediversion.org
