Matadors shine at DFAL tournament

  • Miramonte High tennis players thrived at the Diablo Foothill Athletic League tournament, winning both the singles and doubles titles. The Matadors' Luke Bohuslav earned the singles championship with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the finals over his teammate, Alex Hwang. It was also an all-Miramonte matchup in the doubles final as Peter Martin and Neil Weikert beat Logan Boersma and Andrew Tan 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

    DVAL tennis champs crowned

  • The Diablo Valley Athletic League crowed its boys tennis champions at the annual league tournament, and Northgate was the biggest winner. The Broncos' Ryan Nakagawa beat College Park's Max Tsukanov 6-2, 6-3 in the singles final and will go on to represent the league at the North Coast Section championships. Northgate also won the doubles title behind Aaron Sisneros and Tyler Bunday.

    Eagles walk off with win

  • Junior Lauren Richter delivered the biggest hit in a come-from-behind victory for the Berean Christian High softball team on April 25. The Eagles were down 3-1 after six innings before rallying. With two runners on in the seventh inning, Richter smashed a home run to give the Eagles a walk off win.

    Minutemen win thriller

  • The Concord High softball team's winning streak extended to 11 games after Alyssa Fredzess delivered a game-winning RBI in a 3-2 win over Pinole Valley on April 25. The Minutemen scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nonleague game.

  • Dave Stewart Showdown, baseball, May 4, all day -- De La Salle hosts a great day of baseball at the Oakland Coliseum for another year. The Spartans play Edison-Fresno in the 4 p.m. game.

  • NCS Division I qualifier, boys golf, May 6, all day -- This tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Course is golfers' final chance to qualify for the NCS championships.

    Stars of the week

  • Zoe Marrott, Campolindo softball -- Marrott hit a three-run homer in the first inning of an April 25 game against Acalanes, giving the Cougars all the runs they'd need for a 3-1 victory.

  • Michael Wang, Acalanes boys track and field -- Wang was outstanding at the Sacramento Meet of Champions on April 27, winning the boys 1600 meters in 4:14.67. It's the school's No. 2 all-time mark.

  • Darya Ashim, Diablo Valley women's tennis -- Ashim, the ITA Tennis Rookie of the Year, ended her season in the quarterfinals of the state tournament recently. She was 17-1 in singles play this year.

  • Taylor Blair, Carondelet softball -- Blair was solid in the circle and at the plate in a 9-3 win over Foothill on April 25. She earned the pitching win while also going 2 for 5 with a two run homer and three RBI.

  • Leo Costa, Alhambra baseball -- The junior catcher blasted a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning for the difference in a 4-3 win over Las Lomas on April 25.

  • Jesse Medrano, Clayton Valley baseball -- Two big games from Medrano helped the Eagles to a sweep over Northgate. In two games, Medrano went 5 for 7 with four runs, two doubles and three RBI.

  • Lauren Richter, Berean Christian softball -- Richter hit a walk-off three-run homer in the Eagles' 4-3 victory over College Park on April 25.
