International film festival coming to town
Tickets are now on sale for the firs Walnut Creek International Short Film Festival, taking place June 7-9 at the Cinemark Century 14 in Walnut Creek.
The festival features an lineup of short films from across the globe, including selected entries from Tribeca, Cannes, Sundance and other top festivals. As Walnut Creek's only film festival dedicated to short films, the festival "showcases brilliant filmmaking in the short form — under 25 minutes — with the exploration of intriguing, thought-provoking and innovative films."
The festival will screen 70 films culled from the hundreds of entries submitted.
The festival kicks off June 7 with a red-carpet opening screening and after-party that will cost $15 per person. The festival also features a workshop exploring the short film and a showcase of Northern California filmmakers. For tickets, a list of the films and more information visit www.wcsff.com.
Dwight Stone piano, piano-and-cello concert May 24
Pianist and composer Dwight Stone will perform a solo piano concert Friday, May 24 at the Grace Presbyterian Church, 2100 Tice Valley Blvd. in Walnut Creek.
Original compositions for piano will be performed, sampling the Austria, Los Angeles, early, and current phases of his work. Special guest cellist Pawel Walerowski will be featured on Stone's compositions for cello and piano.
Stone says his compositions reflect his lifelong experience in all facets of music -- vocal, choral, brass, strings, orchestra and, of course, piano.
The performance is free, but donations will be accepted.
Double bill of Jazz Band, Flock of Flutes
Civic Arts Education's Jazz Band and Flock of Flutes spring concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. May 30 at the Shadelands Auditorium, 111 N. Wiget Lane in Walnut Creek.
The Jazz Band features top-flight musicians including drummer Jerry Bazil. With over 40 years experience, Bazil, a Concord resident, has played with Iggy and the Stooges, Mitch Ryder, Aretha Franklin and others in genres ranging from high-powered funk, rock, jazz and country.
