Dons' Faulkner second in 800

  • Acalanes High's Adler Faulkner ran a personal-best 1:51.30 in the boys 800 meters at the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships on June 1, taking second place. The senior shattered his previous personal best time and set an Acalanes school record in the process. It was the fourth straight race that Faulkner set a personal record.

    Falcons eliminated in NCS semifinals

  • The College Park High baseball team had its stellar season come to an end in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals on May 29. The Falcons lost to Casa Grande-Petaluma 12-11 in a marathon game full of twits and turns. Joe DeMers didn't allow an earned run in six innings, but the game was tied 7-7 after seven, forcing extra innings. The Falcons scored three times in the 10th, but Casa Grande came back to tie the game, then won on a walk-off two-run homer three innings later.

    Concord wins NCS Division II title

  • For the third time in four years, the Concord High softball team won the North Coast Section Division II championship. The Minutemen capped their playoff run with a 9-2 victory over rival Clayton Valley Charter in the May 31 title game at Saint Mary's College. Kelly Drake pitched Concord to the victory and delivered a key hit, a three-run double in the seventh inning to give the Minutemen some breathing room.

    Spartans fall in NCS final

  • The De La Salle High baseball team reached the North Coast Section Division I title game for the third straight season, but couldn't defend its title. The Spartans lost to Amador Valley 3-1 on June 1 at Saint Mary's College. Amador Valley used a combination of pitcher to limit De La Salle to one run and four hits. Ray Bartolomucci drove in the Spartans' lone run in the first inning.

    Stars of the week

  • Sarah Reynolds, Campolindo softball -- Reynolds had the game-winning hit in the eight inning against top-seeded Terra Linda-San Rafael, propelling the Cougars to a 4-3 win and the NCS championship on June 1.

  • Trent Shelton, Campolindo baseball -- After pitching a 2-0 shutout in the NCS Division II semifinals against Clayton Valley Charter, Shelton then delivered four hits and two RBI in a 8-0 championship game win over Casa Grande-Petaluma on June 1.

  • Johnny York, Acalanes baseball -- York pitched the Dons into the NCS Division III championship game with his perfect game against Sonoma Valley in the May 29 semifinals. York struck out 15 and recorded six ground ball outs, not allowing a ball out of the infield all afternoon.

  • Kelly Drake, Concord softball -- Drake pitched a shutout in the NCS Division II semifinals and was solid again in a 9-2 championship victory over Clayton Valley Charter in the May 31 finals. The junior also drove in four runs in the championship game.

  • Shannon Mestas, Clayton Valley Charter softball -- Mestas tallied three home runs total in the NCS Divsion II semis and finals, providing the runners up with much of their offense.

  • Max Moore, Northgate boys track and field -- Moore competed in the CIF state meet in both the shot put and discus, just missing qualifying for the discus finals with his mark of 159 feet, 7 inches.

  • Marquis Morris, De La Salle track and field -- The junior raced to a first-place finish in the boys 110-meter high hurdles at the CIF state track and field finals on June 1. Morris was the only athlete to go below 14 seconds, finishing in 13.90.
