Varellas shines in U.S. victory

Peter Varellas, left, a 2002 Campolindo High graduate, played a big role as the United States' men's water polo team opened the Olympic Games with an 8-7 victory over Montenegro on July 29. Varellas scored three goals in the narrow win. Group play continues through Aug. 6 and the gold medal match will be played on Aug. 12. Varellas was on the team four years ago when the United States lost to Hungary in the gold medal game in Beijing.
