Ex-Cal players shine in Moraga tennis tourney
A couple of former Cal players were double winners at the Heritage Bank of Commerce Open last week at the Moraga Country Club.
Tyler Browne and Jana Juricova both won a pair of titles during the Aug. 12 finals. The tournament, formerly called the Stead Open, offers $25,000 in total prize money and crowns champions in five divisions.
Browne, a 2007 Cal graduate, and Juricova, who just finished her collegiate career in the spring, teamed to win the mixed open doubles title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Brian Battistone and Gail Brodsky.
Juricova also won the women's singles title 6-3, 6-2 over Renos' Sherazad Benamar while Browne claimed another doubles title for his second win. Browne and partner Gregory Lee beat Brian Battistone and Chris Wettengel 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 for the men's doubles title.
Reno's Clement Reix captured the men's singles crown while Yasmin Schnack and Katsiaryna Zheltova claimed the women's double championship.
