Stanford Summer Classic Tournament
The Girl's Lamorinda United U14 team placed second at the Stanford Summer Classic Tournament held on Aug. 18-19.
In their first game, the United faced off against the San Luis Obispo Storm. The Storm took an early lead on a fluke goal, but in the process woke up the sleeping United giant. The United responded quickly, with a goal from midfield by Emma Nushi with an assist by Hannah Fishlow. Almost immediately thereafter, another score was added on a blast from the left wing by Jessica Carlin. The second half was all United as they controlled the game, scoring two more goals on shots by Cecillia Gee and Mia Lineweaver, and finished with a 4-1 victory over SLO.
Later that evening the roll continued. Lamorinda took the field against a talented Sunnyvale Alliance Devils squad and continued where they left off. The United scored two quick goals, both by Cecillia Gee on assists from Jadey Sadoff and Olivia Fishlow. In the second half, Lamorinda played the best soccer of their young lives and thoroughly dominated Sunnyvale, possessing the ball throughout, scoring three goals, one by Lineweaver, Gee and Greta Kohls off a beautiful crossing pass by Rosie Cruz, to complete a 5-1 victory over the eventual third place Devils.
Day two was difficult as the hometown Mountain View/Los Altos Typhoon gave Lamorinda all they
The Finals proved to be a clash of titans, as the top 10 ranked Ajax East Bay squad faced off against Lamorinda in a heavyweight tilt. The first half was taught and tense and was scoreless until the very end, when Ajax converted on a set piece play off a corner kick. Lamorinda's back line of Lindsay Easter, Morgan Rogers, Maggie McGuire and Caroline Clark, and brilliant goal keeping by Adriana Uyehara, held Ajax in check and performed beautifully throughout the tournament. In the second half, the Ajax were able to score a late goal on a controversial throw-in play. Undaunted, Lamorinda struck back immediately with a scrappy, hustle goal, on a breakaway by Katherine Larson. Within United had a chance to tie, with Ajax on their heels and their keeper out of position, but the Lamorinda shot just missed off the top of the crossbar and Ajax squeaked by with a 2-1 victory.
