School district apologizes to victims; approves child abuse prevention policy

Moraga School District trustees made a formal public apology Tuesday to former students sexually abused by their teachers in the 1990s.

The move followed an earlier apology and the withdrawal of legal language issued last week stating a former student may have shared some responsibility for the sexual abuse inflicted by her teachers.

Trustees also approved revisions to district policy on child abuse prevention and reporting.

The board voted 4-0 to accept new language that requires all mandated reporters in a team situation to individually report potential or known child abuse to authorities. The new guidelines replace those that said a team of reporters may choose one reporter to alert authorities.
