Freshman Brittany Howard had 12 kills and 31 digs to lead the top-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-11, 21-25, 25-22 victory over No. 5 Washington on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal (24-2, 16-0 Pac-12) extended its win streak to 22 games.

  • Santa Clara earned a 25-21, 25-27, 25-15, 17-25, 15-12 win over USF. Megan Anders had 25 kills for the Broncos (20-8, 9-4 WCC).

  • Middle hitter Kat Brown (St. Francis High) had 12 blocks and Cal had four players in double figures in kills in a 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23 win over visiting Washington State.

    Women's soccer

    Stanford, the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA women's soccer tournament, opens postseason play at home against Idaho State on Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. The Cardinal (17-1-1) is seeking to advance to its fifth consecutive College Cup and fourth straight final.

    Saturday, Santa Clara (11-3-6) plays host to Long Beach State (12-7) and Cal (15-5) plays at Pepperdine (14-6).

    Men's soccer

    San Jose State's season ended in a 2-1 overtime loss to Denver at the MPSF Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. Jonathan Salceda scored for the Spartans (8-9-1)

    Men's basketball

    Cal junior guard Allen Crabbe and Saint Mary's senior guard Matthew Dellavedova were named to the preseason top-50 list for the John Wooden Award.

    John Lamble, Santa Clara's first player to be invited to the ITA Indoor Championship, lost to Minnesota's Leandro Toledo 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. Cal's Ben McLachan beat Texas' Daniel Whitehead 6-2, 6-1. First-round women's winners included Santa Clara's Katie Le, Cal's Zsofi Susanyi and Anett Schutting, and Stanford's Krista Hardebeck.
