The New York Yankees took a step toward filling their hole at third base Thursday by making a one-year, $12 million offer to free agent Kevin Youkilis.

A person with knowledge of the offer said there was a good chance Youkilis would take it but that he also could consider two-year deals elsewhere. The Cleveland Indians are said to be interested in signing Youkilis as their first baseman and reuniting him with their new manager, Terry Francona, who managed Youkilis in Boston.

Youkilis was a three-time All-Star for the Red Sox, playing for their championship teams in 2004 and 2007 before a trade to the Chicago White Sox in June.

The Yankees have an opening at third base because Alex Rodriguez will undergo surgery on his left hip, a procedure expected to sideline him until June. The White Sox signed one Yankees target, Jeff Keppinger, to a three-year, $12 million deal Wednesday. Eric Chavez, who backed up Rodriguez last season, signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Youkilis has won a Gold Glove at first base but played 111 games at third last season. He hit a career-low .235 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs for Boston and Chicago.

Phillies-Twins trade: Philadelphia acquired outfielder Ben Revere from Minnesota for right-handers Vance Worley and Trevor May.

Revere is expected to be the Phillies' answer in center field. He batted .294 with 40 stolen bases in 124 games last season.

Worley was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA last season after going 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA as a rookie in 2011. He had elbow surgery in September but is expected to be ready for spring training.

May was 10-13 with a 4.87 ERA at Double-A Reading. He was Philadelphia's top prospect before his so-so season.

Rays: Tampa Bay and free-agent first baseman James Loney have worked out a one-year deal worth $2 million. Loney played for the Dodgers and the Red Sox last season.

Diamondbacks: Arizona and catcher Wil Nieves completed a one-year contract worth $800,000.

Twins: Minnesota and free-agent reliever Jared Burton have agreed to a two-year deal worth $5.5 million. Burton pitched for Cincinnati last season.

Cubs: Chicago has agreed to a deal with Japanese relief pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa, according to ESPN.

Braves: Outfielder Reed Johnson has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with Atlanta.

Red Sox: Boston and free-agent reliever Koji Uehara have agreed to a one-year deal, according to ESPN. Uehara pitched for Texas last season.

Price of perfection: The uniform that New York Yankees right-hander Don Larsen wore when he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history in 1956 has sold for $756,000.
