Former Cal star Thomas Shields set a U.S. record in earning a bronze medal in the men's 50-meter butterfly at the short-course world swimming championships in Istanbul on Saturday.
He was timed in 22.46 seconds, beating his own mark of 22.58 set in Friday's semifinals. Nicholas Santos won in 22.22.
Stanford's Maya DiRado was fifth in the women's 200 individual medley, touching in 2 minutes, 7.77 seconds. Ye Shiwen won in 2:04.64.
Bellarmine College Prep graduate Andreas Drbal made his World Cup debut in the two-man bobsled while pushing for Nick Cunningham of Monterey as USA-3 finished 14th in La Plagne, France. Drbal, a former UCLA javelin thrower from Belmont, is trying to earn a spot on his first Olympic team in Sochi, Russia.
