J.R. Smith sank a baseline 21-footer at the buzzer, giving the depleted New York Knicks a 99-97 victory over the host Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.

Smith's tough fadeaway jumper from 15 feet had tied it at 97 with 10.6 seconds left. After a timeout, the Suns' play broke down, and when Sebastian Telfair tried to hit Marcin Gortat for a backdoor layup, the ball was knocked back into the backcourt. Telfair chased it down but stepped out of bounds with one second remaining.

Knicks point guard Jason Kidd inbounded to Smith, who got the shot off as he sailed toward the out-of-bounds line. It went in, and Smith was mobbed by teammates.

Smith finished with 27 points, and Kidd had 23. Jared Dudley had a career-high 36 for Phoenix.

The Knicks were playing without forward Carmelo Anthony (hyperextended knee) and point guard Raymond Felton (sprained finger).

Nuggets 126, Lakers 114: Corey Brewer matched his career high with 27 points and host Denver overcame a 40-point effort by Kobe Bryant to snap Los Angeles' winning streak at five.

Brewer hit four of his six 3-pointers in the final 12-plus minutes. Bryant has scored 30 or more points in 10 consecutive games.

The Lakers' Dwight Howard was ejected in the third quarter, drawing a flagrant foul 2 when he jammed his hand in Kenneth Faried's face as the Nuggets forward drove the lane.

Hawks 126, Pistons 119: Josh Smith scored 31 points, Al Horford added 22, and host Atlanta beat Detroit in double overtime.

"When he's playing downhill on you, he's just a monster at that," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "He's coming at you."
