Lionel Messi became the first four-time winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award after shattering the world record with 91 goals last year for Barcelona and Argentina.

Messi won for the fourth straight time, beating Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta in voting announced Monday.

Abby Wambach became the first American to win FIFA Women's Player of the Year since Mia Hamm in 2001 and 2002. Pia Sundhage was voted top women's coach after leading Wambach and the U.S. team to the gold medal at last summer's London Olympics.

Wambach finished ahead of five-time winner Marta of Brazil and ex-Cal player Alex Morgan in the women's voting.

College basketball

Baylor regained the top spot in The Associated Press women's poll after former No. 1 Connecticut lost to Notre Dame on Saturday. The Lady Bears' run of 21 straight weeks at No. 1 ended with a neutral-site loss to Stanford in November.

Notre Dame moved up three spots to No. 2, and UConn fell to third. Duke was fourth, followed by Stanford, Kentucky, Cal, Penn State, Tennessee and Maryland.

  • Christian Watford scored 16 points and No. 5 Indiana (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten) cruised to a 74-51 win over host Penn State (8-6, 0-2). ... Jerian Grant scored 19 points to help No. 17 Notre Dame (14-1, 2-0 Big East) win its 12th straight, 66-60 over host Cincinnati (13-3, 1-2).

  • Duke and Michigan held the top two spots in the AP men's poll for the fourth straight week. Louisville overtook Arizona to be ranked third.

    Lance Berkman passed his physical, clearing the way for the designated hitter/first baseman to join the Texas Rangers. Berkman gets a $10 million, one-year deal.

  • Left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez and the Milwaukee Brewers completed a $2.25 million, one-year contract.

  • Super-middleweight champion Andre Ward of Oakland is expected to begin rehab within a week after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.

    The surgery, performed Friday by Giants orthopedic surgeon Michael Dillingham, repaired a small tear in Ward's shoulder capsule. The injury prompted the postponement of Ward's title bout against Kelly Pavlik for a second time.
