Scott Stallings opened a five-shot lead in the Humana Challenge, holing a 20-foot putt on the par-5 eighth hole for his second eagle on Saturday.

He shot a 9-under 63 at the PGA West's Jack Nicklaus course to reach 22-under 194 in the Coachella Valley in La Quinta.

John Rollins had a 64 to move into a tie for second with Stewart Cink (66), Roberto Castro (69), Charles Howell III (67) and Charley Hoffman (67).

Phil Mickelson had a 6-under 66 on the Arnold Palmer course and made the cut by two shots at 205.

Second-round co-leader James Hahn shot an even-par 72 at the Nicklaus course, and the former Cal player was at 202.

  • Justin Rose extended his lead at the Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) Championship, shooting a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead over Jamie Donaldson (69) and Thorbjorn Olesen (69). A day after Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods missed the cut, Rose made the third round look easy for a 12-under 204.

  • David Frost shot a 7-under 65 in gusting winds and held a two-stroke lead over John Cook (66) at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii. Frost was at 14-under 130.

    Lindsey Vonn won a World Cup downhill for her first victory in more than five weeks, beating Tina Maze by 0.43 seconds in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy. Vonn is recovering from a bacterial problem that sapped her energy the last few months. She clocked 1 minute, 38.25

  • Christof Innerhofer won the Lauberhorn downhill, and Johan Clarey set a World Cup speed record of 100.6 mph. Innerhofer timed 2:29.82 down the 2.74-mile course in Wengen, Switzerland. Clarey, who placed fifth, set the record at the Hanneggschuss straight two minutes into his run.

    Horse racing

    Ramon Dominguez's agent says doctors are optimistic the nation's leading rider will fully recover from a fractured skull. He suffered a spill Friday at Aqueduct (N.Y.).

  • Wise Dan beat out I'll Have Another for Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards. Wise Dan, 5-year-old gelding, won five of six starts in 2012, including the Breeders' Cup Mile. I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

    Miscellany

    The NCAA Division I Board of Directors took the first step toward simplifying and deregulating the organization's complex and sometimes unenforceable rules. At the NCAA convention in Grapevine, Texas, the board approved 25 proposals that president Mark Emmert said "focus the rules on those things that are real threats to integrity of sport."

  • The Chicago Cubs plan on restoring Wrigley Field, announcing a five-year, $300 million project. Owner Tom Ricketts said his family is willing to foot the entire bill -- but only if some long-standing restrictions are lifted. That doesn't mean the Cubs wouldn't accept some financial help from Mayor Rahm Emanuel. A call to the Mayor's office was not returned.
