Brittney Griner scored 25 points, including the 3,000th of her career, to help No. 1 Baylor rally past third-ranked Connecticut 76-70 on Monday night in Hartford, Conn., extending the Lady Bears' winning streak to 23 games.
Griner became the eighth player in Division I history to reach the milestone, doing it on two free throws with 1:05 left. She finished with 21 points in the second half.
The Lady Bears' only loss this season came in Hawaii against Stanford in November. Baylor (25-1) went 40-0 last season en route to the school's second national championship.
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis finished with 26 points to lead UConn (24-2).
Kentucky 70, Texas A&M 66: Cal transfer DeNesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley High) had 12 points and 12 rebounds as the No. 8 Wildcats held off the 10th-ranked Aggies in College Station, Texas.
AP poll: Baylor remained No. 1 in The Associated Press women's poll for a seventh straight week, receiving 38 first-place votes while No. 3 UConn received the other two. The first six stayed unchanged with Notre Dame still ranked second. Stanford, Duke and Cal are after UConn.
San Jose State: Coach George Nessman denied an Internet report that he has been fired.
"No, we have not been fired -- at least no one has told me that," Nessman said in a text message to this newspaper after practice Monday evening.
The report, from the website "Parsing The WAC," said SJSU athletic director Gene Bleymaier had dismissed Nessman and his staff, effective immediately. The report said the identity of the interim coach was "unknown."
The Spartans have lost 10 consecutive games and are 4-24 in conference play the past two seasons.
Kansas State 71, West Virginia 61: Will Spradling scored 19 points and the No. 14 Wildcats used a big first-half run to beat the Mountaineers in Manhattan, Kan., spoiling the return of West Virginia coach Bob Huggins to the school whose program he helped rebuild.
North Carolina State: Former coach Sidney Lowe was arrested and charged with failing to file his North Carolina state income taxes for three years. Lowe didn't file returns in 2009, 2010 and 2011 -- the last three years he coached the Wolfpack, according to the state Department of Revenue. Lowe is an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz.
Duke: The school says former star Phil Henderson has died. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Henderson's mother told him that her son died Sunday at his home in the Philippines at the age of 44. No cause of death was given.
