Jonny Locher, Danny Diekroeger and Brant Whiting each had three hits to help No 14 Stanford beat Saint Mary's 7-2 in Moraga for its fifth consecutive victory.

Locher doubled twice, Whiting tripled and Justin Ringo homered to power the Cardinal (6-2), which had a season-high 15 hits. Whiting had two RBIs.

Colin Ferguson homered for St. Mary's (4-4) in the first inning. Stanford tied the score in the third and scored twice in the fourth inning. Ringo's two-out solo homer gave the Cardinal a 4-2 lead in the seventh. Whiting's RBI triple in the eighth made it 5-2.

David Schmidt (2-0) earned the win with three innings of relief after Dean McArdle pitched the first three innings for Stanford.

  • Greg Harisis drove in three runs and Justin Viele had two hits and two RBIs as Santa Clara (4-4) cruised to a 12-3 win against visiting San Diego State (3-5). The Broncos had 12 hits, including two each by Quinton Perry, Casey Munoz and Peter Summerville. Tommy Nance (1-0) earned the win, allowing two hits and no runs in four innings.

  • Jason Kafka allowed only one earned run in five-plus innings in his first start for San Jose State, but the Spartans (2-6) could muster just five hits and lost 2-1 to visiting USF (4-5). It was San Jose State's sixth straight loss. Kafka, who was not charged with the loss, struck out five.

    Golf

    Stanford recorded a 10-over-par 586 to win the Cal Classic women's tournament at the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton.

    The Cardinal (298-288) shot par in the final round in the best team performance of the tournament Tuesday. Arizona State (296-296) finished second, six shots back at 592.

    San Jose State (311-295) tied for sixth at 606, and Cal (302-305) was eighth at 607 in the 11-team field.

    Arizona's State's Noemi Jimenez (68-71) took individual honors at 5-under-par 139. Stanford's Mariko Tumangan (76-68) tied UC Davis' Demi Runas (71-73) and UNLV's Dana Finkelstein (74-70) for second at 144.

    Megan Osland (76-71) led SJSU, tying for ninth at 147. Morgan Thompson (73-75) led Cal, tying for 12th at 148.

    Softball

    Stanford's Kelsey Stevens was selected as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week. The freshman pitcher helped the No. 16 Cardinal to a 4-1 record this past week by going 3-0, including a perfect game. She had a 0.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19 innings while allowing No. 13 Georgia, Virginia and No. 23 Florida State seven hits and a .115 combined batting average.
