Stamped as the oldest racetrack in America, the Pleasanton oval kicks off fair racing season at the Alameda County Fair.
The 12-day meeting begins Thursday and ends Sunday, July 7. Dark days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The track dates to 1858, when Augustin Bernal constructed it.
The San Jose Giants, the first-half champions of the North Division, begin second-half play Thursday night at Stockton. The Giants went 43-27 in the first half, while the A's Single-A affiliate went 38-32.
Stanford incoming freshman Carley Hoover was selected the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year. She posted a 16-4 record with a 0.15 ERA and 338 strikeouts in 138 innings this past season for D.W. Daniel High-Central (S.C.). Hoover also hit .500 with four homers and 45 runs.
The West Coast Conference held its annual summer executive council and presidents' council meetings recently at the Napa Valley Marriott. The conference announced dates for its 2014 men's and women's basketball championships -- March 6-11 in Las Vegas. With the University of the Pacific returning to the WCC, a new 10-team tournament format will be unveiled. It will feature first-round games involving the seven through 10 seeds, then quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
